South of Midnight: Why is the "Dictatorship of Photorealism" blinding gamers?

"A prova de que uma direção de arte inspirada cria mundos inesquecíveis."

We live in a strange era. While many clamor for innovation, a noisy segment of the public seems to have become hostage to a single standard: extreme realism. If a game doesn't attempt to simulate every blade of grass like in The Witcher 3 , the density of detail in Horizon Forbidden West , or the photorealism of God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 , comments quickly follow: "the graphics are bad," "it looks like a last-generation game."

Recently, the arrival of South of Midnight on the Nintendo Switch 2 brought this discussion to the forefront. And, as someone who has already finished the game twice, I have to say: the truth about this game is very different from what you read in the Instagram comments.

Where did South of Midnight come from?

Originally released in April 2025 by Compulsion Games (a Microsoft studio) as a major exclusive for the Xbox ecosystem, the game was critically acclaimed, winning awards for Excellence in Animation and the Games for Impact award at The Game Awards 2025.

I first encountered it through Xbox Cloud Gaming , and now that the title is expanding to Nintendo's new hardware, it's sad to see that many people's initial reaction is visual prejudice based solely on screenshots.

Elite Tip: If you want to experience this and other cloud-based titles with the best performance, check out the best Controllers and Accessories options on Amazon .

Note: The game South of Midnight is sold exclusively in digital format on the eShop. I recommend securing a good memory card (link above) to enjoy the best performance of the title on your console.

The nostalgia we forgot: From Atari to Photorealism

What happened to our ability to imagine? Back in the Atari days, a square on the screen was a hero, and we had a blast. The fun came from the concept and the gameplay, not from counting polygons.

Today, people are so fixated on comparing everything to "real life" that they forget that video games are art. According to the game's art director, Whitney Clayton , the team studied real stop-motion techniques to make everything look handmade. The "blocky" look and the measured animation are not mistakes or limitations; they are deliberate choices to give the game a soul and texture that generic realism could never deliver.

"It's too cliché": The confusion between legend and documentary.

Another common criticism is that the story of the American South in the game is "caricatured" or "clichéd." Here's the main point: South of Midnight is not a documentary, it's a gothic fairy tale.

Legends are built upon stories passed down through generations. They don't need to reflect the harsh reality of a modern city; they reflect popular imagination and mysticism. The game uses "Magical Realism" to tell Hazel's journey, and criticizing a legend for being cliché is like criticizing a fairy tale for having a castle. The focus here is on atmosphere and folklore, not historical accuracy.

A mechanism that requires brains.

Contrary to what many expected, the game departs from the frenetic hack-and-slash style. In my two playthroughs, it became clear that the mechanics require you to stop, breathe, and understand the rhythm of the narrative.

It's a short journey — between 8 and 10 hours — but extremely dense. I much prefer 10 hours of authentic and focused art than 100 hours of a visually perfect but empty and repetitive open world.

Verdict

If you're the type who only plays games if the graphics look like a movie, you're going to miss out on one of the richest experiences of 2026. South of Midnight is a necessary reminder that video games are still the best place to experience legends — even if they have some pixelation.
